Q: I am a little confused about the relationship between Western and Eastern medicine. Can you clarify? A: Western medicine has been traditionally focused on a disease model with an emphasis on the use of drugs and surgery to correct a health problem. Eastern medicine is focused on a health model, on how well our bodies are functioning. So for example it can take a long time before a health problem develops. However, Chinese doctors can diagnosis whether or in what ways our bodies and not functioning well. By improving how our body functions, by strengthening our weak organs and improving the flow of energy and blood /oxygen circulation we can become healthier. This makes us less susceptible to illness. There is a recent recognition by Western medicine of the benefits offered by Eastern medicine. Some hospitals and clinics now offer “complementary” “alternative medicine” in addition to Western medicine. In Holland Dr. Wang is well known and has a good relationship with Western doctors. Western doctors and hospitals have referred patients to her recognizing her success in areas where Western Medicine has not been successful. Traditional Chinese Medicine and medical qigong can treat some problems more successfully and in a less intrusive fashion than Western medicine. Also Chinese Traditional Medicine and Medical Qigong can help to maximize health. Dr. Wang respects Western medicine for what it does well and refers pts to Western medical doctors when appropriate.
Q: How old is qigong? A: The monks and sages taught qigong to the Chinese Emperors over 5000 years ago!
